STORM SURGES OUR WAY

Junior cricket cancelled Popular carols called off Slippery roads cause havoc Workers told to stay home

-

SEVERAL key events this weekend have been cancelled but organisers are holding out hope that others will still go ahead.

While Denis Walter’s Carols by the Bay has been scrapped, Carols in West Park promoters were optimistic about their chances for tomorrow evening.

With the Geelong West event already postponed by a week due to poor weather, the organisers are holding their nerve until tomorrow morning.

“We’re feeling pretty confident that the weather will have cleared and that we will get to finally enjoy the performances,” they posted yesterday.

A decision will be made at 11am tomorrow whether the outdoor event will go ahead at the scheduled time of 5pm.

Denis Walter’s annual event is among the high-profile events to succumb to the stormy conditions.

“This is an unfortunate circumstance and not an easy decision to make,” a post on Events Geelong said.

“It’s the safest choice and we look forward to once again hosting this brilliant event in 2018.”

When quizzed about why the popular show couldn’t be rescheduled this month, Events Geelong replied: “Unfortunately the performers have commitments on other weekends. It’s quite difficult to postpone an event of this scale.”

Outdoor sports across the region were also called off, including the Sacred Heart Regatta on the Barwon River.

Rowing Victoria said the cancellation followed a call from the State Government to limit non-essential travel on the roads.

“We also know that the Barwon River is expecting a moderate flood at 3.1m which would have water levels inside the boat sheds.”

Clairvaux Primary School’s family outdoor cinema was to run last night but has been postponed until 2018. CANCELLED: Denis Walter’s Carols by the Bay (Sat) Food Truck Fiesta (Sat and Sun) Belmont Market (Sun) Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes (Sun) For updates go to geelongaustralia.com.au
