Endless Summer at end for filmmaker

- ROBBO sport@geelongadvertiser.com.au

ONE of the greatest surf cinematographers passed away at the weekend.

Bruce Brown, famous for Endless Summer and Endless Summer 2, along with numerous other great surf movies through the ’70s and ’80s, was 80.

Brown’s legacy to surfing has been left in tact.

Endless Summer was widely regarded as the first surf movie that had appeal to the broader mainstream audience and a remake was commissioned in 1994.

The remake was a huge Hollywood box office success.

The first Endless Summer movie was credited with discovering the great point waves near Jeffreys Bay and that movie even visited Bells Beach, which was dead flat at the time, but featured some great archival vision of the historic Easter event.

As a sport and lifestyle, the Endless Summer movies will live on forever and if you have not watched them, be sure to do yourself a favour and check them out.

Meanwhile in Hawaii, the final event of the season, which is so crucial to the world title outcome, is battling the weather elements as Hawaii is slammed with swells that are too big for Pipeline.

They are hoping the weather settles for this coming weekend and they can get a great conclusion to the season with four surfers — John John Florence, Gabriel Medina, Jordy Smith and Julian Wilson — all in contention to take the title for 2017.

Four-day forecast:

The good recent summer conditions should prevail into the weekend. Favourable winds most mornings with breach break swells best today before a new swell hits the coast for the weekend to provide plenty of reef action.
