Hendo in for more knee surgery

clubs targeting experienced, big-name players, returning to the top won’t come without its challenges.

But with the club coming off an under-18s grand final and a reserves premiership, McSparron said depth would not be an issue.

“We understand the competition is getting better and as much as we’re going to get some improvement out of the blokes coming to the club, we want to get as much improvement out of the boys that are there and the young fellas coming through,” he said.

“The under-18s obviously played off in a grand final and lost and the reserves got the job done so we’re pretty excited about some of the younger players coming through the club at the moment.”

McSparron said Ammos had been averaging an attendance rate in the 30s so far this pre-season but said that number would increase significantly in the new year.

“We’ve probably had four or five years now where the boys have played pretty deep into September and on the back of that they’ve probably played an extra 15 games over that time,” he said.

“We don’t want to burn the boys out before Christmas so after Christmas we’ll step it up a fair bit.” LACHIE Henderson’s ongoing knee troubles have resulted in the key defender going under the knife.

Henderson had a minor arthroscopy on his right knee on Tuesday, having been restricted by mild pain following post-season surgery in October.

The former Brisbane and Carlton big man — who turns 28 today — will return to the club in the coming days before commencing a modified training program over the Christmas break.

Geelong football manager Simon Lloyd said the arthroscopic surgery would allow Henderson to attack training with confidence in the new year.

“While this is a setback for Lachie, it will allow him to move forward on a rehabilitation plan,” Lloyd said.

“Lachie will work closely with our medical team over Christmas with the aim to return to football early in the new year.”

Henderson has played 41 games with the Cats since crossing to the club at the end of 2015.
