Tourists risk locals’ lives

-

A tourist is fighting for life in hospital after allegedly colliding with a truck when travelling on the wrong side of a Surf Coast country road.

Got to stop foreign nationals driving on our roads without a test here. They don’t know how to drive at 100km/h let alone on the left, or around corners at any speed. Lachlan Cairney

Surprised there hasn’t been many more, given how many have been forced to pull over just by people I know. Therese Jolly

Oh how awful. The poor truck driver, so frightening to see a car coming straight for you. I wonder how many accidents are caused by people not knowing our road rules. Hope all involved will be OK. Hilary Jenner

Thank you for your concern Hilary. The truck driver was my brother and he’s doing OK at the moment. A shock of course and a bump to the head. In hospital under observation. Truck drivers put up with a lot and even though they may not be physically scarred they are usually emotionally scarred after something like this. Aimee and Ben Stevens Sherrott

OMG these international drivers nearly seriously hurt my daughter and her partner last year. And still nothing being done make these people sit a driving test at bloody airports. Kerri Ann

I thought it had signs to tell you what side of the road to drive on for international tourists. Keith Loader

And this is why tourists shouldn’t be allowed to drive here. Sylvia Cook

Not good ... how do you instil with tourists how different things are here. Very sad. Pam Edwards

Happened just before we travelled down same road. Police roadblock sent us all back to the Colac Road. Jenny Kangars

Problem is they are not able to read English to understand the road rules. We travelled today from Colac to Timboon and back and had three close calls with drivers on the wrong side of the road, travelling at 20km/h and driving through intersections. Ann Mitchell
