Celebrity polo postponed due to ‘already crowded’ city diary

- RUSTY WOODGER

A GLAMOROUS event on Geelong’s summer calendar has been postponed, with organisers blaming the city’s “already crowded” schedule.

The Australia Day Polo, which is only in its second year, will not go ahead on January 26 at Eastern Park.

Those with tickets have been left in the dark, with organisers saying a new date won’t be announced until early January.

The original Man from Snowy River, Tom Burlinson, was set to be the headline appearance at the stylish bash, while Cats star Rhys Stanley and model girlfriend Kirsten Clemens are ambassadors.

It is unclear if the rescheduling will affect Burlinson’s in- volvement in the celebrity polo match.

Event director Chris Heverin was contacted but did not respond before our deadline.

The polo was to compete with other major events in town including the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race and the Festival of Sails.

News of the postponement was delivered in a post on the event’s website at 2pm yester- day. “Following a careful and considered assessment of the timing, along with the already crowded Geelong events calendar at the end of January, the organisers of the 2018 Australia Day Polo have decided to reschedule the event,” the post read.

“With the continued support of the Geelong community, we are confident that the new date will allow the event to achieve its undoubted potential.”

It said the event’s partners and stakeholders were “universally supportive” of the decision and were committed to the future success of the sport in Geelong.

Ticket holders wanting refunds have been told to sit tight until a new date is announced.

In an earlier media statement released last Friday, org- anisers said they were expecting a sell out.

More than 2000 attended the inaugural polo day out in January, including a range of celebrities and sporting stars such as Joel Selwood and Catriona Rowntree and Sarah Czarnuch.

It is not the first time major events in Geelong have been moved in a bid to avoid a clash of schedules.
