Plum GFL interleague coaching job up in air

CONFUSION surrounds the Geelong Football League interleague coaching job after news that Jeremy Dyer stood down from the role.

AFL Barwon region manager Lee Hartman reportedly said yesterday that Dyer had “indicated he’ll step down as coach” after accepting an assistant coaching gig at St Mary’s.

“He’s indicated he’ll step down as coach after an unde- feated run, which has been well appreciated from the league’s point-of-view, but it’ll be time for someone new,” Hartman told K rock Football.

But when contacted by the Geelong Advertiser, Dyer said he hadn’t made a decision.

“I’m out of a job by the sounds of it then,” he said.

“I hadn’t made up my mind, so oh well, I’ll give Lee a ring tomorrow and find out what’s going on.

“St Mary’s said if I wanted to, they had no issue with me doing the interleague gig.

“I spoke to Lee and let him know when I went to St Mary’s and he said, ‘Just keep me posted as to what you want to do’.

“We’ll sort it out in the end, that’s all right.”

Dyer believes the inter- league job would suit a GFL assistant coach, should that person be able to manage their time well.

“I can’t see why it wouldn’t (work),” he said.

“It obviously is a bit of time and you’d have to have a good support staff to get around and watch all the games.

“At club land, you’re obviously looking at the sides you’re playing against and those games leading up, so it’s not as if you’re burying your head in the sand in that regard. It’s just time management, basically.”

But Dyer said he hadn’t committed to coaching the state’s No. 1 side next year.

“To be honest, this time of year with work, I hadn’t had a real good think about it,” he said.

“It seems a bit far off at the moment. I’ll speak to Lee tomorrow and see where he’s going with it all and make a decision from there.”

The GFL is set to defend its spot on top of the mantle against Eastern on May 19.

Hartman was contacted for clarification last night.

Meanwhile, former St Mary’s coach Troy Mitchell told the Geelong Advertiser he wouldn’t be interested in coaching the interleague side, instead looking forward to a break from footy.
