Police allege man found asleep in car with firearm and drugs

A GEELONG man found asleep in his car allegedly with a gun and drugs will spend the next few days in hospital after police claim he tried to flee during a Christmas Day arrest.

Officers handcuffed the man when he was found passed out in his vehicle on Gravel Pits Rd, South Geelong, about 7am yesterday.

Detective Senior Constable John McKinnon said, as police attempted to pull the man from his vehicle, they spotted a sawn-off shot gun at his feet.

“The sawn-off shot gun was in the footwell of the driver’s door. There were also four shotgun cartridges in a bag sitting on the front passenger side seat and 3.3 grams of what’s believed to be ice and an ecstasy pill,” he said.

“We had gone there for a welfare check.”

Sen-Constable McKinnon said the man resisted arrest and attempted to drive away before police used capsicum spray and forced him to the ground.

There was also false numberplat­es on the male’s blue Holden Commodore, he said.

“Inside the car we also found a stolen Ambulance Victoria hi-vis vest,” Den SenConstab­le McKinnon alleged. “He has no fixed address.” The 25-year-old has since been charged with drug, theft and firearm related offences alongside resist police arrest and commit an indictable offence while on bail.

He was remanded in custody after choosing not to apply for bail. He’s set to appear in Geelong Magistrate­s’ Court this week.
