Otways zip-line injury probe

- RUSTY WOODGER

OTWAY Fly’s zip line was “functioning normally” when a woman broke her leg on the ride, according to the company.

Emergency services were called to the popular treetop tourist attraction after reports a woman in her 30s had fallen at the Phillips Track site at Beech Forest just before noon Thursday.

Located in the Otways, the zip line reaches heights of up to 30m through the forest canopy.

Otway Fly Treetop Adventures senior operations manager Nathan Bridgeman said there would be a full investigation into the incident, but claimed there were no issues with its equipment.

“The incident occurred when our guest came in for landing at one of our tree top platforms sustaining a serious leg injury,” he said.

“Fortunately there was an off-duty paramedic who was on the tour and was able to support our staff in providing first aid. Our staff are well trained in emergency evacuations from the platforms and they performed a safe and timely response.”

Mr Bridgeman said the woman was in a “great deal of pain” but remained calm before being flown to hospital for treatment.

“Our thoughts are with the guest and her family for a full recovery,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Otway Fly said the park was operating as normal. WorkSafe is investigating the incident.
