Fast Car steps up a gear
CARETAKER trainer Jeff Britton had no idea he’d been sent a budding star greyhound.
But Fast Car Driving is one race away from being a Group 1 winner and $100,000 recipient.
The Chris Carl-owned greyhound was sent from New South Wales to the Anakie trainer ahead of tomorrow night’s Group 1 Silver Chief Classic.
The age-restricted race is for dogs 15 months old or younger and will be run at The Meadows.
He was one of three dogs sent to Britton, none of whom screamed of star quality.
“When I trialled the three of them, they didn’t trial that well,” Britton said.
“I thought, ‘I don’t know why he’s sending these down’. I didn’t really know a lot about them, so I didn’t realise this one was so good.
“We had some promising pups and they got injured at the wrong time so it’s just a bonus to pick these up.
“I think they might just be good race dogs.”
Fast Car Driving surprised Britton with a stunning last-tofirst semi-final win last Saturday night to book his place in tomorrow’s final.
Although he’ll need some luck, a Group 1 win isn’t out of the question, according to Britton.
“He’s drawn near the fence (box three) and he’s not going to be one of the leaders, so you just hope he can use his race sense to get underneath dogs,” Britton said.
“You just don’t want a tearaway leader; if you get a tearaway leader I don’t think he can pick up dogs coming from behind. If there’s a little bit of traffic up in front, he’ll be there on the line I think.”
And that might end his stay in Anakie. A return to NSW beckons, possibly ahead of Saturday week’s heats for the Group 1 Paws of Thunder at Wentworth Park.
