Lynn in, Maxwell snubbed

-

INJURY- PLAGUED power hitter Chris Lynn can see an opportunity to cement a place in Australia’s shorter-form cricket teams, but won’t be putting pressure on himself after an unexpected recall.

Lynn was yesterday named in the Australian one-day squad for the five-match series against England starting on January 14 at the MCG.

Plagued by shoulder issues, the 27-year-old has played one ODI and five T20 internationals. He gave a timely reminder of his matchwinning capabilities by smashing 63 off 46 balls in Brisbane Heat’s BBL victory over Melbourne Stars at the MCG on Tuesday.

Since last May, Lynn has faced just 58 balls in top flight cricket and wasn’t expecting an international recall so soon.

“I kind of wrote my chances of playing for Australia off this season, just due to the shoulder recon, so to get the call-up again is very exciting,” Lynn said.

Glenn Maxwell has been snubbed from Australia’s oneday team despite a prolific domestic summer with the bat.

Maxwell was dropped during Australia’s 50-over series against India late last year and has not been recalled despite being this season’s leading Sheffield Shield run scorer.

National selector Trevor Hohns said an average of 22 in his past 20 matches had sealed Maxwell’s fate, but Australian captain Steve Smith admitted there were deeper reasons.

“The way he trains — I think he can train a little bit smarter,” said Smith.

Hohns suggested it was in Maxwell’s power to win his spot back. “No one is in any doubt about Glenn’s ability or his potential,” Hohns said.
