Plea for more blood donors

- CHAD VAN ESTROP

THE Australian Red Cross is calling for more than 800 donations of blood this month to maintain supply in Geelong.

The blood service said the community had donated in “great” numbers during the Christmas period but more donations at its Geelong centre were needed.

Australian Red Cross Blood Service spokeswoman Erin Lagoudakis said donations were particularly needed on Sundays.

“During the month of January we need more than 800 additional donors at the Geelong Blood Donor Centre,” Ms Lagoudakis said yesterday.

She said donations of plasma — which transports nutrients, hormones, and proteins around the body — were also needed.

“Plasma is an important part of the blood and is used to make up to 18 different lifesaving products,” she said.

“Donated plasma is essential in the treatment of burns victims, road trauma victims and those with autoimmune conditions.”

Plasma is used during complex heart surgery; to treat brain disorders; to fight infection during bone marrow transplants; and to prevent deep vein thrombosis in those with rare blood disorders.

Donate blood or plasma at the Geelong Blood Donor Centre by calling 13 14 95. Donations can also be made at 7 Bridge St, Werribee, or 28-40 Gravesend St, Colac.
