MERMAID’S TALE A LESSON IN COAST CARE

-

A MYTHICAL sea creature came ashore at Indented Head yesterday to teach children about the importance of protecting our coast.

Jacinta the Mermaid educated the next generation about keeping the sea free from plastic and pollution as part of an innovative school holiday program.

The free activity is one of 300 offered by the State Government between January 2 and 28 as part of the Summer by the Sea initiative.

The annual Coastcare program, now in its 22nd year, aims to develop community appreciation for the coast while showcasing different features of the environment.

Acting Coastcare coordinator Bec Cross said Mermaid Adventures was a new addition to the program this year.

“This year’s Summer by the Sea program is packed with free activities on the Surf Coast and Bellarine over January, and there’s something for all ages,” she said.

“Across the next week there’ll be canoe cruising at Lorne, the chance to discover curious creatures during rockpool

rambles at Anglesea and Point Lonsdale, and the family fun of beachcombing at Clifton Springs and St Leonards.” Another Mermaid Adventures event will be held in Geelong on January 16.
