TOP IB STUDENTS CELEBRATE RESULTS:
WHAT do you do when years of painstaking studies culminate in achieving your dream score?
For Wandana Heights’ Justin Heaton, it involved going back to sleep.
The 17-year-old was one of Kardinia International College’s duxes after receiving his International Baccalaureate (IB) results yesterday morning.
Heaton and two fellow students — Erin Bennett and Alexander O’Byrne — achieved a score of 42 out of 45, which equates to an ATAR of 99.40.
“I was over the moon, (but) it was only seven in the morning, so no one else was up,” Heaton said.
“I walked to my mum’s bedroom and banged on the door and said I got a 42. She was pretty happy. Then I knocked on my brother’s door.
“To be honest, after that I went back to sleep.”
The teenager, who is originally from Hong Kong and moved to Australia three years ago, studied a range of subjects as part of his diploma including high-level maths, Japanese, theatre and psychology.
He now has his sights set on studying engineering at Monash University.
More than 100 students from Kardinia International College and Geelong Grammar School completed the internationally recognised IB diploma last year.
Geelong Grammar’s Harry Wyatt and Nat Lam achieved top honours at their school, snaring near-perfect scores of 44 out of 45.
Wyatt, of Russells Bridge, has attended the school since he was three years old, while Lam is from Hong Kong and joined Geelong Grammar on a boarding scholarship.
The school had 10 students earn an IB score of 40 or higher, with 26 of the 60 students achieving at least one perfect subject score of 7.
At Kardinia, the average IB score was 34, smashing the worldwide average of 28.9.
Principal David Fitzgerald said the combination of IB and VCE results revealed nearly a quarter of its students achieved an ATAR above 90.
“These results reflect the efforts and commitment by all students and staff who have worked with them throughout their time at Kardinia International College,” he said.
“I sincerely thank the many teachers, families and friends who encouraged and supported our students throughout their studies.”
