By George, we really did blow it

- RYAN REYNOLDS

THE frustration became too much for Melbourne Victory star Leroy George.

Subbed off GMHBA Stadium with the scores 1-1 in the 74th minute against Central Coast Mariners, George ripped at the tape keeping his socks up before he could even get off the ground.

He walked off to the sideline right where he stood rather than on halfway and shuffled behind the Central Coast bench.

And with a consolation pat on the back from veteran Leigh Broxham, George slumped onto the bench.

The 30-year-old Dutchman’s actions spoke louder than his words.

George had been instrumental on the pitch, setting up numerous chances which Victory squandered in its 1-1 draw with the Mariners.

He knew — even by the time he was subbed — Victory should have been well clear of the struggling New South Wales-based side.

“Of course I am disappointed (with the result),” George said. “This is football. If you don’t score the goals and they can score the 1-1.

“You give them confidence and they will score.”

Victory coach Kevin Muscat said post-game that it was “as dominant a performance we’ve had this year”, with his side dominating possession and keeping Central Coast shot stopper Ben Kennedy during the hot evening.

George was central in that dominance, creating three chances, only one less than the entire Central Coast team.

“We are in good form. We created a lot of chances. I am very disappointed about the result,” he said.

“We had a good game, but we could not finish it.”

Despite the result Victory is putting a great run of form together, losing just one of its past six matches.

George called on his team to keep that momentum going.
