Marathon golfers to tee-off for charity
STAMINA will be more vital than a straight swing when people tee off for genU’s Hundred Hole Hike next Monday.
Participants will begin the golfing marathon at the crack of dawn and are expected to reach the 100th hole in fading light.
The event has been known to take participants 15 hours to complete, walking close to 60km from hole to hole.
The Hundred Hole Hike raises money for the ABI Clubhouse in East Geelong, supporting those around the region who are living with an Acquired Brain Injury.
Local business owner Phil Shay is one of the many who will tee off next Monday, marking his fifth year participating in the event.
“I love golf, I love getting fit, and I really appreciate the things that Karingal (genU) do within the community,” he said.
“It’s all about Karingal (genU) and especially supporting their community centre, which if people haven’t seen yet I highly recommend checking out.
“It’s all-inclusive, not just for clients but the general public as well. It helps integrate everyone.”
Mr Shay has personally raised $15,000 in the past few years for Karingal and genU.
The Hundred Hole Hike has found a new home this year at The Sands, Torquay.
CEO Mike Mckinstry said that the venue change would not mean golfers would face any less of a challenge.
“Make no mistake, this is no walk in the park – The Sands boasts an impressive course that will test the best golfers,” he said.
“If you can’t play but you can pay, please go to our website to see how you can support the hikers through sponsorship.
“All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you will be helping to support a group of people in the community who rely so much on the services that the funds from the Hundred Hole Hike raises each year.”
Registration is open until January 12, for a fee of $150. Participants are also required to raise a minimum of $1000 to be eligible to compete on the day.
Those individuals or businesses who would like another way to get involved can ‘adopt a golfer’, with more information available from www.genu.org.au/ events/hundred-hole-hike
