Extra police keep lid on NightJar

-

POLICE say a combination of lower attendance and increased security measures led to a well-behaved NightJar Festival at Torquay this week after a brawl in Bell St after last week’s event.

Inspector Bruce Thomas said about 7500 patrons attended, down from 14,000 the previous week.

“We upped our police numbers at the event and also spoke with the organisation, which made a few changes to their security and running of the event,” he said.

“We were happy with that and the behaviour was nowhere near as bad as it was last week.

“There were still a few minor incidents but generally a big improvement in the behaviour of people.”

Insp Thomas said police detected a number of young people consuming or in possession of alcohol, and adults with open alcohol containers — all of whom were subsequently issued onthe-spot fines.

He said further improvements would be made at future events.

On January 4, more than 100 youths brawled with police, leaving one officer injured.

Torquay police units responded to the anti-social behaviour on Bell St about 10.30pm but it took hours to bring the group under control.

Five people were arrested on a variety of charges including assault, riotous behaviour and being drunk and disorderly.

The group tossed bottles at police vehicles and one officer was assaulted.
