Highton 1 holds out Drysdale

- GRAHAM RAWLINS

HIGHTON 1 held off a resilient Drysdale to open the 2018 part of the season with a 10shot win and maintain the number one place on the GBR Division 1 ladder.

The depth of Highton’s bowling ranks was fully tested on Saturday with both Division one teams battling hard to record wins. The Highton 1 team held off a determined Drysdale while the Highton 2 team held on by the skin of its teeth to post a thrilling oneshot win over Lara. These outcomes see both of the Highton teams sitting in the top two places on the ladder with the mouth-watering clash of both teams next Saturday in a twilight match on the Highton green.

The match against Drysdale was a thriller. The Jeremy Fitzgerald rink showed its class with its ninth win of the season and the only rink win for Highton 1 by 17 shots. This was vital in the final outcome as Drysdale took the remaining three rinks but was unable to make up the required number of shots to take the match overall.

Highton 2 was fully extended in its match against Lara taking the game by one single shot and a 15-3 points outcome. The win by its number three rink was very important in the overall context of the match. With Paul Hines (lead), Ben Lombardi (second), David Cairns (third) and Graeme Ott (skip) in top concentration mode the nine-shot rink win was vital.

Torquay confirmed its top four-position with a 14-4 (8shot) win over Ocean Grove. With the competitions leading rink skipped by Alan Sampson working well in its 11-shot win over the Luke Benson rink the Torquay combinations proved too strong on the day.

Belmont recorded a sound 14-4 (29-shot) win over St. Leonards with the Robert Agg skipped rink taking its first win of the season by a commanding 32-9 win over the Barry Culph rink.

In a battle of the cellar dwellers it was a clean sweep victory to Geelong Cement over Portarlington scoring 18-0 and 24-shots win.
