More than 350 cricketers in Geelong for junior country week

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

AFTER 4480 overs, Geelong junior country week is over.

More than 350 cricketers represented their leagues across 48 games and eight finals from Monday to Thursday last week, with a spread of leagues returning wins.

Colac was represented by two under-13 teams that both walked away victorious, while the BPCA and GCA collected wins too.

“We had eight finals, they all went off pretty well,” junior cricket chairman Dennis Davie said.

“Colac won both the under-13 (Smith and Cummins) comps, and the rest were shared between Bellarine and Geelong.

“The big thing is the kids thoroughly enjoy it.

“I drove past a ground on Thursday and someone’s taken a wicket, and the kids are all over each other with excitement, they’re highfiving each other, even on the Thursday. At the end of the day, all the kids had a good time which is what it’s about.”

However, one serious injury earlier in the competition put a flat note on what was a successful week.

“Unfortunately we had a lad break his ankle, just one of those one-off freak accidents on Monday morning, down at Barwon Heads,” Davie said.

“It’s not too bad but it’s something you don’t want to happen.

“I’ve spoken to his mum and he’s going along OK, but he’s going to be out of cricket for six weeks.”
