Queenscliff skips clear

- GRAHAM RAWLINS

QUEENSCLIFF withstood the pressure from Leopold to maintain top position on the GBR Midweek Division 1 bowls ladder after round 14 yesterday.

A 28-point break over second placed adds plenty of spice for their match-up next Tuesday.

The key to Queenscliff is a strong combination of skill and experience and a true ability to play as teams.

Yesterday it was another clean sweep of three rinks with the Barrie Close rink leading the way by seven shots. The Close rink of Di Price, Denice Clark and Di Roberts have won nine of its outings so-far this season and sits third on the skips ladder with 18 points and a shot difference of plus-109 – the highest in the competition.

Torquay provided another confident display of bowls with its 30-shot clean sweep of Ocean Grove (2). It was a consistent performance against the Ocean Grove (2) having won the same fixture in round five.

The Karen Harrington rink won by six shots with the Alan Sampson rink winning by five shots. This left the way open for the Daryl Kitchin rink of Tim Jenkinson (lead), Maureen Gribble (second) and Lyn Kitchin (third) to provide the highlight of the day with its 19shot win over the Marlene Sutton (Ocean Grove) rink.

City of Geelong and Highton hold third and fourth place respectively on the ladder following hard fought wins over Lara and Geelong Cement.

Ocean Grove (1) team had to work hard to take its win over a challenging Portarlington. It was a sound improvement by Portarlington from the round five match when the Grove had a clean sweep of the three rinks and 39-shots.

Yesterday it was a harder fought match before the Grove won by 16 shots.

The Geoff Lawson rink of Roland Como (lead), Ann Durran (second), Ivan Gribble (third) took the big scalp of the Matt Flapper rink with a 30-20 scoreline.

In Division two, the battle for final four positions has heated up with six teams battling it out for the top four.

Geelong RSL took a step forward with a two-shot win over Highton despite winning just one rink, via the combination of Wayne Lindkvist (lead), Joan Averay (second), Don Madden (third) and Lynette Sutton (skip), who won by 10 shots from the Anne Cotterill rink.

This leaves the number three through to the number six team vying for a final four position.

Only four points separate Belmont (fourth) and Geelong RSL (sixth) with only four rounds remaining.
