Belmont hungry for redemption

- MATT FLAPPER DIVISION 1

BELMONT will take to the green against Highton 2 knowing the importance of a win if it’s any chance to reach the top-four and a potential finals opportunity.

One full count of match points separate the two teams, and chairman of selectors Steve Davies said his side would be playing its first final of the year.

“It’s massive, the most crucial game for us this year. We have made some positional moves and returned David Ross back to the skipper’s position,” he said.

In their previous match-up in Round 4 this year, Highton proved too good at home, but Davies believes his side can turn it around.

“We can’t worry about the opposition too much,” he said.

“They have a different lineup to last time and while we respect that we have to worry about our own performance, we lost last week, we are at home this week, we need to take full advantage of that.”

Highton skipper Trevor Moore said he took a lot of positives out of last week’s loss to their club mates and they can take confidence into the battle.

One highlight would be his side’s 17-17 draw with the inform Jeremy Fitzgerald rink.

“For our rink it was a fantastic effort, it was hard to get any more than one shot each end and the draw really was a fitting end to a great contest,” Moore said.

If the mercury remains under 36C tomorrow, Geelong Cement will have the tough task of holding off Torquay at home, while Highton 1 should be too strong for Portarlington at home.

Lara battles with thirdplaced Ocean Grove and St Leonards faces Drysdale in what will be a hard-fought contest on the carpet at St Leonards.
