CORIO’S ‘GOAL OF THE YEAR’

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

IT took one of the best goals you’ll ever see from Corio winger Habib Habib to deny Geelong a clean sheet in its Geelong Community Cup clash last night.

Down 2-0 with not long to play in the match, Habib put away a clearing header with a rocketing volley from 25m, straight into the top right corner to give his club’s supporters a highlight for the night.

“I think we’ve actually seen goal of the season already, what a strike that was,” said Geelong assistant coach Tom Daly, who applauded the strike and went to Habib after the game to congratulate the opponent.

“I haven’t seen a goal like that in years.”

But it was Geelong’s night at Stead Park as the State League 1 powerhouse claimed a 2-1 victory.

It had plenty of chances to put its local foes to the sword, but two goals proved enough as the side’s resolute defence denied Corio many chances.

“We should have put it to bed a lot earlier but that’s football. They carried on right until the last minute, we knew that was going to happen, and we were just happy to get away with a win,” Daly said.

“It’s a bit early in the preseason, it’s just a local derby and it was played in a very good spirit.

“You need to play decent sides this stage of the preparation that we’ve got. We’ve got a few niggling injuries at the moment, we went out in the Macedonian Cup last week, had two games in three days plus a training session, I think it’s a little bit too much for the boys at this level.

“But we’ll just take it easy over the weekend, regroup on Tuesday and hopefully get everyone back for the next game.”

Corio coach Ante Didulica said he was happy with the effort. “We had our chances, they had theirs,” he said.
