White and Vines partnership steadies the Bushrangers

-

CAMERON White steadied Victoria with an unbeaten 68 in the Sheffield Shield match against South Australia yesterday at Adelaide Oval.

The Bushrangers finished day two on 5-248, trailing SA’s first innings of 379 by 131. White is seeking a 10th Shield hundred.

Victoria was chewing up the Redbacks’ first innings of 379 during a 114-run opening stand between Marcus Harris and Travis Dean before debutant left-arm seamer Nick Winter triggered a 3-7 collapse.

Winter removed both openers and then bowled skipper Peter Handscomb for a duck.

Winter, 24, made the Dukes ball sing, trapping Harris lbw and producing a ripping inswinger that exploited Handscomb’s high backlift and knocked over off-stump.

Geelong’s Victorian debutant Eamonn Vines, batting at No.3, negotiated 108 deliveries for his 27 before being adjudicated lbw at 4-188.

Handscomb was deprived of valuable time in the middle before leaving for the Test tour of South Africa.

White’s last two visits to Adelaide had been unhappy.

The veteran lost his spot in Australia’s one-day side after making three runs against England on Australia Day and was out for two in Melbourne Renegades’ Big Bash semifinal loss to the Strikers.

Yesterday, White held the Redbacks at bay in a 67-run fourth-wicket stand with Vines and an unbroken 35-run sixthwicket union with wicketkeeper Seb Gotch.

Chadd Sayers bowled with- out luck in his first outing since he was overlooked for the South Africa tour. Jake Lehmann grassed a hot chance from Dean on 30 off Sayers.

QUEENSLAND had a 335run lead at stumps on day two of its Shield match against Tasmania at the Gabba. The Bulls were 6-195 in their second innings after medium-pacer Luke Feldman (6-32) skittled Tassie for 115.

WESTERN Australia was dismissed for 215 at the WACA Ground in reply to NSW’s first innings of 204.
