Highton snares vital win

Pressure mounts as midweek finals loom

-

HIGHTON is in pole position to secure a lucrative top-four spot after claiming a clinical 30-shot win over Portarlington in midweek competition yesterday.

Dianne Monk’s rink led the way with a 16-shot win over Lucy Skowronski, while Jeremy Fitzgerald was a comfortable 11-shot winner over Ivan Gribble.

It was a tight one for Highton’s Ray McCorkell, who had his hands full during his threeshot win over Geoff Lawson.

With one round remaining in the home and away season, Highton holds a narrow onepoint lead on fifth-placed Leopold. It also has an easier Round 18 fixture, travelling to Lara, while Leopold must topple powerhouse Ocean Grove on its own rink.

Leopold did all it could in yesterday’s hefty 41-shot win over City of Geelong.

Star skip Nicole Shortis was again dominant, claiming a 24shot win over City of Geelong’s Gerry Dean rink.

Shortis is going to have to bring the heat next week if Leopold is to upset Ocean Grove, who continued its red hot form with a 55-shot win over Geelong Cement.

Cement couldn’t handle Ocean Grove’s star power with Matt Flapper (31 shots) and Faye Richardson (23) both getting the job done.

Cement’s Julie Connolly gave Rod Brehaut some nervous moments in his rink’s one-shot win.

Elsewhere, Lara went down by 37 shots to Torquay.

And, as expected, Queenscliff trotted to a 26-shot win over Ocean Grove 2.
