Beach death riddle haunts family
ELISA Curry’s brother has revealed the family turmoil sparked by the mother-ofthree’s mysterious death.
Nicholas Baines detailed his family’s struggles since his sister Ms Curry disappeared from her Aireys Inlet holiday house on September 30 — with part of her body washing up on a nearby beach on October 11.
Mr Baines said a lack of evidence into the circumstances surrounding his sister’s death had compounded the family’s grief, and he voiced concerns over any suggestion it may have been suicide.
“She’d never, ever mentioned suicide,” Mr Baines said this week.
“It can’t be ruled a suicide. There’s no evidence. It’s basically inconclusive. I hope it was an accident or suicide.”
Mr Baines also said his sister’s death had caused conflict in the family.
The brother claimed Ms Curry had struggled with relationship troubles shortly before her disappearance and was also “a binge-drinker”, who attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
Ms Curry had been at the centre of a massive search effort following her disappearance late last year, with neighbours claiming to have seen her late the night before her disappearance. The neighbours said the disappearance was out of character.
Mr Curry and his three young children had been at the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne while Ms Curry watched the footy at the house in Aireys Inlet, celebrating the Tigers’ win into the evening with neighbours.
When her family returned to the Surf Coast holiday home on Sunday morning, Ms Curry could not be found.
Three days after her disappearance, Mr Curry issued a plea for her to make contact with her family, or for anyone with information to contact police.
A woman walking along the beach at Point Roadknight made the grim discovery of human remains on October 11. Police later confirmed the remains were those of Ms Curry.
