Injured Kyrgios withdraws from Delray

-

NICK Kyrgios has withdrawn from the Delray Beach Open which started overnight because of a right elbow injury.

Kyrgios was hurt in Australia’s Davis Cup loss to Germany two weeks ago, and he withdrew from the ATP event in Rotterdam last week.

The world No. 15 had been training in Delray Beach the past few days. “I was working hard to be able to be fit and healthy, but my elbow needs more time,” he said. Kyrgios was seeded fifth for the tournament.

ROGER FEDERER returned to the top of the world rankings in Rotterdam on Friday. Yesterday, he put an exclamation mark on a the milestone by winning the tournament for good measure.

Federer overpowered Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-2 in less than an hour to win his 97th career title.

South Africa’s KEVIN ANDERSON bagged the fourth title of his career with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/1) victory over Sam Querrey to claim the ATP Tour New York Open yesterday. Austria’s DOMINIC THIEM won his second Argentina Open yesterday, defeating Slovenia’s Aljad Bedene 6-2, 6-4.

Thiem needed just an hour and 30 minutes to knock off Bedene in the clay-court final, and secure his ninth trophy.

PETRA KVITOVA contin- ued her remarkable comeback by beating Garbine Muguruza in the Qatar Open final yesterday for her 13th straight win and second consecutive title.

Kvitova will return to the top 10 rankings today for the first time since she was the victim of a knife attack in her home in December, 2016 that led to a lengthy lay-off. RYAN Gregson has never been more ready to medal.

But the 1500m specialist secured his Commonwealth Games ticket the hard way at the national trials at Carrara Stadium on Sunday.

Stuck on the inside in seventh spot with only 200 metres to run, he pulled wide and mowed down the halfdozen runners to win a third straight national 1500m title.

Runner-up Jordy Williamsz also locked in automatic selection for the Games, while the third discretionary spot is likely to go to 800m winner Luke Mathews.

At the conclusion of the four-day trials, 57 ablebodied athletes had met the automatic selection criteria, with selectors still to chose a further 31. The home team of 111 will also include 23 paraathletes.

The final squad will be announced Thursday, with chairman of selectors Dion Russell predicting there could be several appeals.
