THE WHISPER
THERE might be a few interesting items for general business at tonight’s routine Geelong Cricket Association meeting of clubs.
The fixture is always a point of contention and Third Man hears the GCA is open to the idea of changing the make-up of the draw next season.
Ideas including a possible shift towards more one-day cricket, potentially adding Twenty20 matches into the regular Saturday fixture and other tweaks are all up for discussion.
But the league appears highly unlikely to introduce Sunday cricket in any form (other than unique occasions and finals), based on overwhelming feedback so far from clubs.
GCA president Barry McFarlane has confirmed the league is reviewing the overall composition of the fixture to ensure it meets the demands of the modern-day player.
But McFarlane said GCA clubs would be involved in the process before any changes were implemented for next season — if any were at all.
The local Twenty20 competition currently runs as a midweek round-robin carnival, separate from the regular home-and-away season. There are separate grand finals for each division and the results do not count towards club championship points.
In Premier cricket, T20 matches are now built into the home-and-away calendar and results count towards the overall ladder position, but the games carry less premiership points than a two-day match.
