FANTASTIC effort from Torquay Boardriders Club on the weekend in Newcastle where it competed against 25 of Australia’s best boardriding clubs and finished an all-time high at sixth place overall.

This was easily the best result ever for a Victorian club competing at national level.

Torquay lived up to its motto ‘Go hard or go home’ and, with an abundance of young emerging surfers, it could become a real powerhouse in the immediate future.

The event was dominated by NSW clubs that eventually filled the final four placings, with Snapper Rocks from Queensland placing fifth.

Culburra Boardriders from the NSW South Coast won in extraordinary circumstances — its final surfing getting the winning score with less than one second remaining.

Culburra was always the favourite for this event, boasting world champion Tyler Wright as its leading surfer along with her siblings Owen and Mikey Wright.

While Owen did not end up competing, youngest brother Mikey was the day’s standout surfer.

Of all Australia’s emerging surfers, Mikey Wright looks the next one most likely to perform on the big stage.

It will be interesting to see him on the Gold Coast in two weeks for the opening Quiksilver Pro.

Four Day Surf Forecast:

Clean conditions and small beachbreak waves today and tomorrow, with Thirteenth Beach region probably the best chance of a decent small ride.

Saturday will also be small and confined to beachbreaks while Sunday should see a reasonable new swell to 1m before winds tend onshore.
