Tight Cup match ends in draw

- LACHIE YOUNG

A 2-2 draw with Barwon last night finished off Golden Plains’ Geelong Community Cup campaign but coach Ahmad Sulaimi says his side will take plenty of confidence out of the performance.

After falling behind early, Golden Plains bounced back to level at 1-1 before conceding again to put themselves behind the eight-ball.

But a strike to draw square gave Sulaimi’s men a deserved point, and left them buoyant ahead of the season proper in State League 4.

“We were pretty content over all, there were probably a couple of games we thought we could have played a little bit better but we played within our means and there is a lot of learning to do in the next four weeks until we kick off the season,” Sulaimi said.

“Given that we’ve only had four weeks of training and there has been a shift in personnel with a lot of young boys coming through, I’m really impressed with how they’ve got on board with what we have introduced.”

The final round of matches for the Geelong Community Cup commence on Friday at Stead Park when Bell Park takes on Corio at 6.30pm.

The Geelong Rangers and Geelong clash will follow immediately afterwards at 8pm, with that game to decide the final ladder placings.

The third and fourth place playoff will then be held next Wednesday night, with the final to be held on Friday, March 2.
