Horses race into town

AUSSIE music legend Daryl Braithwaite is set to gallop into Geelong this month for an all-star Twilight at the Track line-up.

Braithwaite will join headliner John Farnham, along with The Black Sorrows, Richard Clapton and Taxiride, for the March 18 gig at the Geelong Racecourse.

Geelong and race tracks are second homes for the ARIA Hall of Fame inductee, who visits family in the region regularly and is best known for his massively popular cover of The Horses.

“The gig itself; I drive past that track all the time when I go down to Geelong to visit my brother and, lo and behold, we’re playing there,” Braithwaite said. “It’s great to be on that sort of bill.

“I like Geelong anyway, but it will be good especially with the likes of John Farnham.

“It will be good to see the likes of Richard Clapton and Joe Camilleri because I haven’t seen them for maybe a year or so, so catching up will be pretty good to see what they’ve been up to and all that.”

For the all-star line-up there will be one song likely to bring the house down — Braithwaite’s cover of The Horses, a 1989 song written by Rickie Lee Jones and Walter Becker.

Braithwaite’s cover has become an Australian favourite, and one he still hasn’t tired of performing.

“No, no, I still love it,” he said when asked if he got sick of playing it. “I think the crowd like it as well if they can have a sing. It’s still very much enjoyable, and I’ll enjoy obviously playing it down there as well, at Geelong.

“It seems like it’s got a life of its own, The Horses, it just seems to keep on going, and even about a year ago I met up with Rickie Lee Jones who wrote the song with Walter Becker, and I was telling her about it and she was flabbergasted at the reception that it gets in Australia. It’s just very lucky in many ways.

“My personal favourites would be As The Days Go By, and another song that most people don’t know and don’t like, is Do You Still Love Me Babe.

“It’s a cover by Ryan Adams, which I absolutely love.

“(But) I’m thinking of dropping it very soon. It might be time to put it out to pasture for a little while. But, we might bring it to Geelong.”

Twilight at the Track will be at the Geelong racecourse on Sunday, March 18.
