Coach rolls up his sleeves after 4-0 loss

- RYAN REYNOLDS

GEELONG coach Callum Lupton says his team’s 4-0 loss to Bell Park didn’t reflect their competitiveness in last night’s women’s pre-season friendly clash at Stead Park.

The hosts were 1-0 down at half time, before the floodgates opened with two goals in 10 minutes breaking the contest.

Lupton, in his first game in the dugout at Geelong, said he learned a lot about his team from the hitout.

“We played well. (The score) probably didn’t reflect that match, but that’s all right, things happen,” Lupton said.

“Even though we did lose we got some positive feedback.

“I don’t think they were 4-0 better than us. Definitely not.

“On another night it could have been a different score, easily.”

Lupton said the result had given him plenty to work on with his women’s team ahead of the local league season.

“(I said leading into the game) if we win 10-0 or we lose 10-0 or we draw, we knew we’d go back to the drawing board on Monday,” he said.

“We learned a lot about fitness, positions, and how they like to play. And we can now introduce how I like to play.”

Lupton said Bell Park was able to take advantage of its position once it went 2-0 up.

“They had two really good players and they were a good set-up,” he said.

Last night’s match was the second of two women's practice games in this year’s Community Cup.
