Good things come in threes at Swans

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE GCA1

GLENN Hauenstein will today become the seventh player in South Barwon’s history — and third in his famous family — to reach the rare 300-game feat.

Hauenstein joined the club as an 18-year-old in 1993-94, a year after his older brothers Darren and Brad crossed from Grovedale Uniting.

Since then, the family name has been synonymous with South Barwon Cricket Club.

Today, Glenn will register game 300, a year after his brothers clocked the milestone at the Swans.

“It certainly is exciting,” Glenn said.

“It’s good to have played that many games at the one club. I’ll probably be a bit more nervous (today) but I’m good at the moment.”

Loyalty clearly runs through the family’s veins, despite a number of financial incentives thrown the way of Brad, who GCA historian Kevin O’Dowd noted this week had just become the only GCA1 firsts player to score both 7000 runs and take 400 wickets.

Had Brad gone, this might be a different story, but Glenn is glad they didn’t.

“I’m sure plenty of offers were thrown at Brad over the years, but there were no offers for me, so it was quite easy to stay,” he quipped.

“When we got there, we were a mid-range Division 2 club and over the years we just got stronger and stronger. Now we’re a fairly successful Division 1 club.

“We’ve all been on the com- mittee most of the time as well since we’ve been there, so there’s no reason to leave with all the mates there.”

Flags have been hard to come by, but the trio did share in a Division 2 first XI premiership two decades ago.

Centuries with the bat have been even rarer, with Glenn yet to log triple figures.

He has played 120 first XI games, with today to be his 147th second XI game, which is a South Barwon record for the club’s twos.

He also has 139 catches to his name, one behind the club record held by Butch Lowe, who is still playing, along with 4924 runs, a highest score of 94, twice, 25 half centuries, 285 wickets and 400 maidens.

“Compared to football, you can probably get there in a shorter frame time because you can play more games, but in the top grades you generally play 12-13 games a year,” Glenn said.

“But to join Brad and Darren, and I think I’ll be the seventh player at the club, it’s a fairly rare feat.”
