Warning issued to killer craft

DOLPHIN, TURTLE DEAD

- TAMARA McDONALD

RECREATIONAL boat and jet ski users are being urged to keep their distance from marine animals following two deaths this year, including a dolphin at Queenscliff.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning issued the warning after a young dolphin was found last month with a large gash on the top of its head at Queenscliff beach.

A green sea turtle was found with a large crack in its shell at Williamstown, in Melbourne’s west.

“Both wounds to the animals were fatal and thought to be caused by a boat strike,” DELWP wildlife officer Suriya Vij said.

“The dolphin’s wound is consistent with head trauma with fracture of the skull and internal cranial bleeding. The fatal wound is likely consistent with injury caused by a boat propeller.

“We are asking water users to behave responsibly around marine wildlife to ensure these amazing animals aren’t harmed or stressed in their natural environment.”

Recreational boats must stay 100m from dolphins, unless they are approached, while jet skis must remain 300m from dolphins. More information on regulations can be found at delwp.vic.gov.au or by calling 13 61 86.

To report injured, sick or distressed marine wildlife, call the AGL Marine Response Unit on 1300 245 678.

Call the Whale and Dolphin Emergency Hotline on 1300 136 017 to report any fish stranded, entangled or struck by a vessel.
