Man flees house fire

- TAMARA McDONALD

A MAN fled his burning home in Norlane yesterday as it caught alight.

Rex Lee was home alone using his computer when he heard noises and noticed “black smoke” coming from the back of his house at 52 Alkira Ave.

He escaped the house without injury about 2.30pm.

His wife Linda, who purchased the home in 2002, was out shopping at the time, and he said she would be devastated about the potential loss of her treasured photographs.

Mr Lee said to say he was feeling a “bit ordinary” was “an understatement”.

Neighbours rallied around the couple late yesterday afternoon as smoke continued to billow from the house. The couple’s two dogs were saved from the backyard.

Country Fire Authority crews, Ambulance Victoria paramedics and police officers responded to the blaze.

Corio senior station officer Ross Crompton said the fire and smoke damage to the house was “significant”.

He said a car at the rear of the home also caught on fire.

The cause of the fire was unknown, and it was declared under control just before 3pm. 1 Those who raise automobiles
