Man suffers serious facial injuries in attack at The Royal Geelong Yacht Club

A WEDDING party guest has been slashed across the face during a late-night brawl between guests outside a popular Geelong waterfront venue.

Emergency services were called to The Royal Geelong Yacht Club on Eastern Beach Rd after reports a man had sustained serious facial injuries during an assault, shortly before 11pm Saturday.

Detective Sergeant Adam Forehan said police were still working to establish the facts but a 26-year-old man had suffered serious facial injuries in the attack.

He said the motive behind the assault remained unknown.

“It is reported to have occurred outside the Geelong Yacht Club. He was assaulted and sustained a serious facial injury and conveyed to hospital for treatment,” Sgt Forehan said.

“We have no descriptio­n of offenders ... we’re trying to establish all those facts.

“The investigat­ion into the incident is ongoing.”

Victoria Police spokesman Acting Sergeant Alistair Parsons said the victim was a guest at the waterfront wedding when he was “slashed across the face by another guest” at the Eastern Beach Rd venue.

Sgt Parsons said when police arrived another man was also arrested for being drunk.

The armed offender remains at large.

“The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threat- ening injuries,” he said.

“A man was arrested for being drunk.

“The exact circumstan­ces surroundin­g the incident are being investigat­ed.”

Royal Geelong Yacht Club Commodore John Kint said the venue had hosted a small wedding reception on Saturday night.

Mr Kint said there were no earlier outbursts of violence at the event to his knowledge.

“We are assisting the police,” he said.

“It was a small wedding ceremony.”

A Geelong hospital spokeswoma­n said the patient remained in a stable condition in hospital yesterday.
