GEELONG WEST HOME SELLS FOR OVER $2M

- PETER FARAGO

A MASSIVE Geelong West house complete with the suburb’s only private tennis court has sold for a record price.

The four-bedroom house at 39 George St, Geelong West, sold for close to $2.2 million after it was passed in at auction on Saturday.

Buxton, Newtown, agent Tom Butters took the lone $2 million bid from the local buyers — which was at the lowest end of the asking range — before closing the auction.

He said negotiations inside the 2273sq m compound lasted 40 minutes before an agreed sale price was reached.

Mr Butters wouldn’t reveal the sale price after the auction.

“It’s at the top end of what we were quoting, which was $2 million to $2.2 million,” he said.

Mr Butters told the crowd the property was “beyond rare” because there was nothing else like it in Geelong West.

Built around 1970, the four-bedroom house is secluded behind a tall brick fence and front garden.

But inside, the home opens to a spacious outdoor entertainment area with a swimming pool, sauna, outdoor kitchen and bathroom, plus a rear tennis court. A basketball halfcourt is at the very back of the surprising property.

Geelong West’s previous house price record was $1.361 million for a renovated five-bedroom Victorian-era house in Wellington St, which sold in May, 2017.

A 10-bedroom former doctors residence and consulting rooms at 242 La Trobe Tce sold for $1.5 million in 2016.

The George St property was one of two enormous residential properties that went under the hammer on Saturday.

The other was at 13 Chester St, Newtown, where agents passed the property in after a $1.92 million bid.

Auctioneer Guyon Wilson said he was disappointed with the result.

He said the property, which includes a home built around the 1940s, boasts a panoramic view above the Deviation to Queens Park and the Barrabool Hills. He said the property was worth more than $2 million.
