Decision looms for $5b Ford factory bid

- HARRISON TIPPET

A DECISION on a $5 billion defence contract that would breathe new life into Geelong’s Ford factory could be just days away, a Victorian MP claims.

Minister for Trade and Investment Philip Dalidakis said a decision was expected in coming days or weeks on who would be awarded the Commonwealth’s LAND 400 Phase two contract.

The contract to build 225 combat reconnaissance vehicles is being contested by a Queensland bidder and BAE Systems, who will manufacture the vehicles in Victoria.

Last year BAE Systems announced it would use supply chain company Marand to use Geelong’s Ford Factory to manufacture hulls and turret shells — creating about 60 new jobs for the city.

Mr Dalidakis said a longawaited decision on the contract would be made soon.

“We anticipate being advised of the outcome any day now and call on all Victorians and politicians of every stripe to back regional Victoria and regional Victorian workers for this bid,” Mr Dalidakis said.

“The company (Marand) is looking to increase its footprint in Geelong and base a significant part of its LAND 400 work at the former Ford factory. “This would create as many as 60 new jobs in Geelong, including positions suitable for former automotive workers.”

Corangamite federal Liberal MP Sarah Henderson has long advocated for the project to be tendered to BAE Systems, due to the creation of local jobs.

The Federal Government first announced the short-listing of BAE Systems Australia in 2016.

The company will base its operations from Fishermans Bend in Melbourne, if selected.
