Fanatic to shine at Cup

- LINCOLN MOORE

FANATIC can top off an already massive weekend for the Lindsay Park stable in today’s $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville.

David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig produced a Group 1 Australia Cup and Newmarket double at Flemington on Saturday with Fanatic poised to continue the party.

“It was a red letter day for the stable,’’ David Hayes said of Harlem and Redkirk War- rior’s wins.

Hayes said Fanatic, a proven stayer having won the New Zealand Oaks and last year’s Sandown Cup, was put on a path towards the Adelaide and Sydney Cups at the end of the spring.

“We backed her after Sandown and set her for the Adelaide Cup,’’ Hayes added.

“It looks a race within reach for her and if she can get the job done then she’ll more than likely go to Sydney ,’’ he said.

Fanatic finished runner-up behind Aloft in the Roy Higgins Quality in Melbourne last time and Hayes said the good barrier and in-form jockey Michael Walker were big pluses heading into the two-mile feature.

“Her form is outstanding going into the race and she comes into her own at two miles,” Hayes added.

“I’m quietly confident that with an in-form Michael Walker aboard that she can win.’’

Lindsay park also saddles up former French galloper Al haram and Raindrops On Roses who will be ridden by top local jockey Jamie Kah.

“The French horse (Al Haram), I expect to roll along on the speed if not lead and should run well,’’ Hayes said.

“And Raindrops On Roses really stays and her last start was pretty impressive.

“All three horses go into the race in really good form,’’ he said.

Fanatic is now a $4.50 favourite with Ladbrokes and will be out to give the stable their second Cup in three years. after Purple Smile’s win in 2016.

“Punters have spoken in the past 24 hours and Fanatic has easily been the best-backed horse,’’ Ladbrokes Tom Hackett said.

“The majority of the biggest bets placed with us have been on the Lindsay Park mare and she is now responsible for over 50 per cent of our hold on the race.”

Hackett said Darren Weir’s Ormito, who finished just behind Fanatic in the Roy Higgins was the best horse backed to beat the favourite, while the Cindy Alderson-trained O’Lonera ($15 into $9) with Dwayne Dunn to ride, was also specked at each-way odds.
