Galaxy’s winless streak rolls on

- NICK WADE WNPL

GEELONG Galaxy coach Kat Smith admits her side remains a work in progress after its winless start to the season continued on Saturday.

One of the strongest NPL Women teams in recent years, Galaxy is wading through uncharted waters after slumping to a third consecutive loss, this time a 2-0 defeat to a powerful Bulleen Lions side.

Smith was left to rue a handful of defensive lapses that opened the door for Bulleen goals in the 49th and 77th minute.

But the major headache for Smith centres on scoring and finding avenues to goal, having found the back of the net only once in three matches.

“I’m not particularly seeing teams being able to dominate us through the middle of the park, or us not being able to hold possession of the ball,” Smith said.

“We can certainly discuss the fact we’re not as dominant in front of goal as we were in previous years. We’re working out how we can create more scoring opportunities.

“But there’s a little bit of a theme in how we’re conceding goals. But again, you can only win a game if you’re scoring goals, so that’s an area we’re looking at.”

Having played most of the league’s best sides in the opening rounds, Smith was confident her side could soon turn its form around.

“It’s a little bit frustrating, but I think we’re in a phase the club hasn’t experienced before. It’s not unknown in football or for me or the players, it’s just something they haven’t experienced (as a team) given our past success.

“We can’t play the football we used to play yet because of, one, the turnover in our senior squad and, two, other clubs have recruited high quality players.”
