Look what we saw by the sea shore
THOUSANDS of art enthusiasts descended on Lorne over the weekend for the sixth Lorne Sculpture Biennale.
The festival celebrates the best Australian and international contemporary artists against a breathtaking coastal backdrop.
Lorne-born curator Lara Nicholls chose the theme Landfall for this year’s Biennale, encouraging artists to explore the idea of nature vs. humanity.
“Lorne was the perfect place to investigate these ideas because you have this little densely populated urban area, and directly behind that is this wild nature,” she said.
“We have chosen works that resonate within that environment.”
More than 40 artists from across the world are exhibiting in various places around the Lorne township.
A particular highlight of the Biennale is a 4km sculpture walking trail starting at Erskine River and ending at St George River, featuring the work of 25 artists.
The Biennale opened last weekend and runs until April 2.
Ms Nicholls said the exhibition was something not to be missed.
“It’s probably one of the very rare opportunities where you can see major, emerging and international sculptors all exhibiting in one place, that’s very rare in Australia,” she said.
The 2016 Biennale attracted 65,000 visitors to the region.
