BELLS WINS A BIG BREAK

- SHANE FOWLES

STRICTER planning controls will be enforced around the famed Bells Beach to protect the features of the hinterland.

Expansion pressures have been threatening the natural assets that make Bells Beach a prized coastline, with widespread concern about the risk of overdevelopment.

Planning Minister Richard Wynne has confirmed that new measures will be introduced to safeguard against the construction of homes on rural blocks in the area.

“This amendment ensures nearby landscapes will remain untouched for generations to come — exactly as they should be,” he said. “Bells Beach isn’t just a surfing hot spot, it’s a big driver of our economy too.

“It generates enormous visitation and great opportunities for local businesses. These planning safeguards will en- sure it stays that way.”

The Bells Beach hinterland includes farming land and tree-lined approaches to the world-famous site from Bells Boulevard and Bones, Addiscott, Jarosite and Bells Beach roads.

The famous break will host action this weekend when surfers battle it out for a wildcard entry into the Rip Curl Pro, which is due to begin on March 29.

Mr Wynne’s announcement followed a public process last year to consider new planning controls.

After a total of 43 submissions, the planning amendment also proposed clearer direction for tourism facilities in the hinterland.

“We did hear from some people who believe that some development is acceptable, as long as it is designed sensitively, which we respect,” Surf Coast Shire councillor David Bell said last August.

“(The) majority of the submissions supported the amendment, highlighting how much value people place on the rural hinterland around Bells Beach.

“It’s what makes Bells such a special location, so it was pleasing to learn that these people want to respect and protect the natural environment.”

Mr Wynne was in Geelong yesterday to launch an issues paper by the Great Ocean Road Taskforce.

The Government-appointed taskforce called for the creation of a lead agency to oversee a new long-term plan for the full stretch of the famous coastal route.
