Giants aim to fly under the radar

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

NEW Geelong West coach Greg Mellor wants his side’s action to do the talking as the club happily flies under the radar.

There has been little written about the Giants heading into their second year as a rebranded team, with Mellor happy to keep it that way. “That’s where we need to fly, I think,” he said. “We’re just in a spot where we’re building. I’m big on action more than words, so for us as a club, it’s about doing and showing.”

The fact Mellor and his staff have been able to retain 100 per cent of the list has been a big tick, with the former St Albans mentor able to build on last year’s 10th-placed finish.

“It shows that those players are committed and really believe in the direction the footy club is going, and it’s not just one person’s vision, it’s a collective the whole club has taken, from the board and the committee, all the way down and encompasses our junior program as well,” Mellor said. “We certainly think it’s a really exciting time to be involved in the Geelong West Giants.”

Ex-Geelong Falcon David Handley will be one of the side’s biggest boosts, after the forwardmidfielder was overlooked during the AFL draft period.

“There’s no ceiling on where we want to get to,” Mellor said. “Each training session we turn up with a particular aspect that we want to work on and improve and certainly a significant part of my coaching philosophy is teaching.

“Time will show how that progresses over the course of the year. We expect to see improvement.”
