QUEENSCLIFF, HIGHTON BOWLS CHAMPS:

- GRAHAM RAWLINS

QUEENSCLIFF has taken back-to-back Premier Division bowls pennants following a well-executed grand final plan over Bareena yesterday at Belmont.

Following its preliminary final win over Ocean Grove on Saturday by 18-shots, the Queenscliff combinations worked in a well-disciplined and determined manner to take out the title once again.

The Saturday win was a confidence-booster that put Queenscliff in the right frame of mind going into the grand final yesterday.

The success of the Steve Sullivan rink over the two days set the example for the remaining Queenscliff rinks to follow. On Saturday, he led his rink to a masterly 24-9 win over the season’s top-performing rink skip- pered by Craig Hodges. His team then consolidated further in the grand final to post a 39-18 shot win over the David Priddle rink.

The rink of Ray Butler (lead), Kevin Coltish (second) and Barrie Close (third) played inspired bowls with excellent weight and length throughout the matches.

The grand final was another top clash between the two clubs with only one shot separating the two over the home and away season and Bareena taking the qualifying final by 12 shots.

Queenscliff finished on top of the home and away ladder with 220 points which included 13 wins, four losses and one draw and a shot difference of +295 shots while Bareena finished second also with 220 points which included 13 wins, four losses and one draw with a shot difference of +203 shots.
