Rookie Cats showing class

- LACHIE YOUNG

THE next crop of star Geelong players were on hand yesterday to help local students with some new training drills as the Cats announced that Bisinella Developments had signed a three-year sponsorship exten- sion of the club’s school program, BioCATS.

Debutants Lachie Fogarty, Esava Ratugolea and Tim Kelly took Belmont Primary School students through handball and skills drills just a day after lining up against Melbourne and had some assistance from draftees Charlie Constable and Gryan Miers.

BioCATS, run from Geelong’s community centre, is an experiential learning program delivered to grade five and six school students from Geelong to Warrnambool to Bendigo and the Grampians.

Students and teachers participate in dynamic scientific experiments to learn about the science and maths of football and career pathways in sport.

The program has seen 9000 students from 110 schools engaged in maths, science technology and health, and the way it shapes the game of football since beginning in 2013.

Bisinella Developments, one of the region’s largest land development companies, has been a sponsor of BioCATS for the past three years, with development manager Richard Bisinella saying the program was about mixing fun and learning.

“The program provides school students with a fantas- tic opportunity to learn more about the benefits of being active and participating in sport in a fun and interactive environment,” he said.

The program is held in partnership with BioLAB: Victorian Bioscience Education Centre, Bisinella Developments and SEDA College.
