Lovick loving fresh start

New Ammos captain raring to run out with new club ROUND 1

NEW Geelong Amateur captain Daniel Lovick says the move to the BFL has reinvigorated his love of football.

The St Joseph’s premiership defender crossed to Ammos in the off-season, before cocoaches Rowan McSparron and Jarrod Young asked whether the 32-year-old had aspirations to captain the BFL powerhouse.

Lovick said he took a few weeks to decide before accept- ing the role.

“Obviously not being there long and first pre-season, I just went about the job I do,” he said.

“I turned up and just tried to put my best foot forward and the captaincy didn’t even cross my mind.

“Probably a few weeks ago Rowan and ‘Youngy’ came to me and mentioned they thought I could be the leader of the club, so they gave me a few weeks to have a think about it.

“Obviously being 32 and stepping down (from GFL), commitments had been eased at BFL level, with McSparron and Young giving him more time to be with his family over summer.

“It feels like the pre-season hasn’t dragged on which I think my wife is happy with,” he quipped.

“‘Youngy’ and ‘Rowey’ have allowed me to do stuff away from the club which is a lot easier. Going to pre-season training, it’s an hour-and-ahalf, maybe two hours by the time you get there and do a warm-up.

“At home, I can chuck one of the kids in the bike and go for a ride and I’m still getting an hour’s worth of fitness. It’s allowed me to be at home with the family more.”

But the key defender faces a tough initiation to BFL footy when Ammos clash with a new-look Anglesea side boasting Jordan Erskine and exJoey Dale Carson in attack.

“Round 1 is going to be very exciting; Anglesea, I think they’re an unknown quantity with the players they’ve recruited this year and I’m a bit worried about what their forward line could bring,” Lovick said.

“I think I should know how to play both of them (Erskine and Carson), but I think it will be up to the midfields, that will determine on how well our backline go against them.”

Asked if he’d put his hand up for one or the other, Lovick said: “It will be up to Rowey and Youngy to make that decision.

“Hopefully I just might slot in somewhere between one or two of them.”
