FORMER North Melbourne premiership player Shannon Grant’s jealous rage led him to strangle and punch a woman and throw her into a fence, it’s been alleged in court.

The Norm Smith medallist was yesterday warned in the Moorabin Magistrates’ Court he could be looking at time in jail over allegations he repeatedly punched and terrorised the female victim last year.

Grant faces 18 charges including recklessly causing injury and unlawful assault.

The court heard he allegedly threw the woman into a fence, leaving her with bloody facial injuries, after a dinner party at his home in Highett on June 30.

On November 30, it’s alleged witnesses intervened when they caught the 40-yearold verbally abusing the victim at Sandringham beach.

He allegedly threw a beer bottle at the victim and dragged her toward his car after finding text messages from another man on her phone. He was later arrested by police who reported he was “rude and belligerent” and gave a no-comment interview.

A month later, Grant allegedly attacked the woman and dragged her across the floor of their hotel room after accusing her of texting other men.

Magistrate Charles Tan said Grant’s alleged offending was severe and prolonged and warranted jail time should he be found guilty.

Grant is seeking to contest the matter when it returns to court on June 26.

He is undertaking a range of behavioural change and alcohol programs.
