Fuel prices tipped to drop

- TAMARA McDONALD

GEELONG drivers can expect petrol prices to drop as the Easter break goes on.

Yesterday the RACV fuel prices tool on its website had fuel prices listed as high, but prices had trended down since Wednesday.

RACV manager vehicle engineering Michael Case said although fuel prices are relatively high at the moment, prices would get progressively cheaper throughout Easter and the rest of the Victorian school holidays.

“Our advice to motorists is to wait as long as possible before they fill up, because the prices will continue to go down,” he said.

The majority of Geelong fuel stations listed on the RACV’s tool were selling unleaded for between 144.5c149.5c per litre yesterday.

BP Breakwater had the cheapest fuel in Geelong at 129.5c-134.5c per litre, the online tool showed.

The cheapest fuel in the region could be found at BP Colac West, where unleaded was going for less than 124.5c per litre.

“If you’re travelling, it’s worth just checking the prices of the location that you’re either going to or the regional centres that you’ll be travelling through ... because on any given day they do vary,” Mr Case said.

“Quite often when fuel prices are high in Melbourne and Geelong they can be cheaper in nearby regional centres, so fuel is not always more expensive in regional Victoria.”

The cycle reached its maximum price last weekend, he said.

“We’re about a week into what could be three or four weeks of a fuel price cycle,” Mr Case said.

“Each day after the (cycle maximum), it goes down by a relatively small amount ... about one to two cents a litre per day.

“It’s got another couple of weeks to play out before it gets down to the new minimum price and then you’ll see the beginning of a new cycle occur.”

Mr Case said fuel cost “a little bit less” in Geelong than in Melbourne at the moment.

“The average price (on Wednesday) in Geelong was 145.3c compared to 146.9c (on the same day) in Melbourne,” he said.

“It’s quite possible the discrepancy will continue throughout the cycle.”
