New-look Newcomb salutes playing past
NEWCOMB will celebrate its heritage with a new playing strip.
The Power have adopted a striking new look, incorporating elements of the old Dinosaurs guernsey while maintaining the traditional colour scheme.
With a predominantly maroon front, light blue neck and maroon and yellow V, the jumper also acknowledges the club’s heritage with a dinosaur and 1976 monogram.
“We’ve put the dinosaur on our backs because that’s part of our history,” Newcomb president Damian Mahoney said.
“This jumper is bringing a bit of the old and the new. We’re celebrating our heritage and it’s not too different to our original strip.”
Established in 1976, the Newcomb Dinos originally wore a maroon guernsey with light blue yolk and distinctive light blue shorts with a maroon stripe. A dinosaur badge with a yellow stegosaurus was also on the jumper. In 2000, the club opted to change its name to Newcomb Power, adopting a similar strip to that worn in 1997 by Port Adelaide Power. The jumper was predominately maroon, with yellow and light blue lightning bolts down the left side. Mahoney said members of the committee had proposed a jumper change late last year. “We discussed it at last year’s AGM and made a proposal to the members,” Mahoney said. “There were a few people on the committee who came up with the design, and a few other jumpers were designed as well, but most of the members were in favour of this one. “They took it to the committee and we agreed with it and put it to the AGM and everyone thought it was a great idea.” Mahoney said the change was like a breath of fresh air for the players. “It has been well received,” he said. “The Power jumpers were just old, that’s another reason why we looked at a new jumper. “They were the jumpers from 2013, so they were fiveyear-old jumpers and they were a bit ragged and worn. “I’ve already had a couple of opposition players say they like the new jumpers.” It’s the third jumper change in the club’s 42-year history.
