Corey can prove he’s a wheel deal

- JEFF DREW SPEEDWAY

WARRNAMBOOL sprintcar driver Corey McCullagh is in the box seat to be the next Avalon Raceway track champion if he can make tonight’s A-main final.

The 28-year-old will walk home with $20,000 and the series title if he can make tonight’s A-main final, following a summer that has seen him amass 165 points across the championship.

McCullagh’s season highlights include a win in the Warrnambool Classic, third place in the Avalon Raceway’s Presidents Cup and a win at Avalon in the Great Southern Showdown, upstaging many veteran drivers this season with his controlled style of driving, making him the most successful driver of the current season.

The annual Easter Sprintcar Trail is held over three nights and starts at Avalon tonight, before moving on to Borderline Speedway, Mount Gambier, on Easter Saturday and Premier Speedway, Warrnambool, on Easter Sunday.

But McCullagh can wrap up the Avalon track championship tonight.

He must make the final to take out the $20,000 first place in the track championship, but more than 50 teams nominated, so making the Amain will be no easy feat.

The weekend will bring the best teams to town, including the likes of James McFadden, David Murrcott, Jamie Veal and defending Easter trail champ Darren Mollenoyux.

Victorian young guns Brayden Parr, Jordan Charge and Rusty Hickman — all of whom are just 18 — will also be eager to take out a win in the Easter trail.

With entries from all states in Australia, this weekend is a must for sprintcar fans. Supporting the sprintcars will be the popular super rods, plus a demo derby and the annual fireworks spectacular.

Qualifying kicks off a bit earlier, with cars on track from 5.30pm.

Gates open at 2pm with adults $30, concession $25 and kids 12-16 $15. Children under 12 are free.
