Hordes of happy campers

- JAIMEE WILKENS

OUR region is bursting with visitors as thousands make their way down the coast for the Easter break.

Warm autumn temperatures and school holidays means booming business for caravan parks across the region, with sites around Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast booked out weeks in advance.

Barwon River Tourist Park assistant manager Don Hewitt said the park was enjoying one of its busiest Easter periods in years.

“We’ve certainly always been busy around Easter, but this is the first time I remember us being fully booked,” he said.

“People have come all the way from Adelaide and Port- land for the weekend. It’s very busy down here.”

Mr Hewitt said school holidays and warm weather might have attracted more people to the region this Easter.

The Big 4 Bellarine park is just as busy, with the recent addition of a glamping accommodation option proving popular with visitors.

Big 4 Bellarine marketing manager Sherryn Bennett said the park was booked out a week before the Easter holiday period.

“We get a lot of new people visiting the park each year as well as the returning regulars,” she said.

“It’s one of our busiest weekends. People started arriving Thursday and when they clear out Monday we’ll have the school holiday wave arrive.

“The glamping has been very popular this year, perfect for those who want to camp with a few extra luxuries.”

Campers can look forward to sunny weather today, with cloud increasing tomorrow, but rain is forecast for Monday.
