Cuolahan stars in return

IT was a roaring start to the BFL season for Torquay, as it came from behind to win against reining premier Modewarre at Spring Creek Reserve yesterday.

For returning Tigers star and coach Courtney Cuolahan, it was a good indication of how the team matched up against the competition’s best side from last year.

“I think we matched up really well with them, I think their midcourt matched ours really well which made it a good tussle. It came down to what goal end or defence end could get on top,” she said.

Fifteen-year-old shooter Daisy O’Kane made her seniors debut for the Tigers and made an impact on the scoreboard early, doing well not to be intimidated by her older opponent.

“She’s only going to get better but I think the exposure to that sort of game is good, so we’ll still do a lot of work with her,” Cuolahan said.

Question marks surround Sarah Bumpstead, who went off with an ankle injury in the third quarter. However it was good news for Anna Masek, who played well upon return from a knee reconstruction.

Despite Modewarre’s lead at the start of the final term, the Tigers dug the heels in and clawed their way back to a three-goal victory. Integral in this was the ability for Tigers players to stick to their roles.

“It’s always good to come up against the best so I think credit to our girls, we eventually played our roles and played as a team and I think we were lucky to come away with a win,” Cuolahan said. “We’ve got heaps to work on …. I think we just have to keep fulfilling our roles and working hard at training.

“It’s good to be back.”
